MICHELLE BROWN
Michelle Brown
Michelle Brown, originally from Illinois, received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education with a specialization in Language Arts from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa in 1992. She received her Master"s Degree in Special Education with an emphasis in Severe Affective Needs in 1993 at the University of Northern Colorado while living in Boulder, Colorado.
Michelle Brown was a teacher for Youth Benefits Placement Agency, a service providing protection for abused, neglected and runaway children. She instructed English, Math and Lifeskills to students with emotional disabilities ranging in age from 11-18 years old.
She taught as a Special Educator at Jefferson High School in Edgewater, Colorado. She determined vocational plans for students, taught 9th grade Government and 9th-12th grade Algebra, while adapting the curriculum to meet students" needs. She also served as the co-director of the urban-art program for at-risk teenagers.
She spent three months as a Winant Clayton volunteer in London, England for the Oxford House Arts and Education Department. She taught Somalian refugees and African/Bengali immigrants, creating units for British infant and junior schools, and directed art and history projects in regular and special needs schools, and published and displayed work of local artists and poets. This was followed by travel to Ireland, Scotland, Amsterdam, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, France, Spain and Greece.
Michelle Brown was a teacher for the La Jolla Learning Institute, a non-public secondary school (grades 6-12) in San Diego. She developed assessment tools, instructional strategies, enrichment activities and behavioral goals. Following this, she was the SED (Severe Emotionally Disabled) Day Class teacher at Del Dios Middle School in Escondido where she provided ability-appropriate curriculum, interactive programs to improve social/emotional skills, and daily counseling and behavior management.
In 1998, Michelle founded the Educational EDGE (Eliminating Detrimental Gaps in Education) academic tutoring facility in affiliation with the International Institute of Martial Arts.
In 1999, Michelle Brown participated in an abroad program through the University of San Diego in Otalora, Spain at the Educational Center of Mondragon Corporation Cooperative (MCC). Seminars and study took place in the Basque Country of Northern Spain and were followed by travel to San Sebastian, Madrid, Costa Del Sol and Barcelona.
Mrs. Brown has Elementary and Special Education teaching credentials in Illinois, Iowa, Colorado and California (grades K-12). She is working towards her Administrative Credential. She also carries a certification as a CPI instructor - Crisis Prevention and Intervention.
Mrs. Brown is currently a Leadership Studies Doctorate Student at USD, a Program Director for the International Institute of Martial Arts, the chief instructor for the Tots' Program, and cofounder of the KidFit USA Program.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown are proud parents of four children: Kai (2000), Brendan (2002), Katie (2004) and Sarah (2005).
